LIBERATION

Hi everyone and welcome to Beat Meditation, a blog all about the finer qualities of life. I figured that since I spend about 80% of my non-working day listening, searching for, expanding on, making and interpreting music, I should dedicate a blog to it so that I'm able to share all the weird and wonderful experiences involved. The blog will be taking in the rare grooves that I've managed to stockpile over the years for you to download and keep, free of charge. In addition to this, I'm always on the lookout for interesting album artwork to accompany my posts, so if you've got any please send it in. So every week, I'm going to try upload something interesting that you've [probably] not heard before, whether it's rare, hard-to-find boogie 45's, forgotten gems or new as-yet-unappreciated material.

This week, I've been getting into Rene & Angela who first got big with their eponymous debut album in 1980. The year after, with the help of legendary producer Bobby Watson (of Rufus fame), they made a spectacular entrance into the growing and wildly popular boogie sound. Together with Watson, they were instrumental in helping to usher in a new era of modern soul groove. For me, the stand-out production here is "I Love You More" which is basically an all funky gliding piano, heavy synth bass [courtesy of the Moog Liberation keytar] and soaring disco strings. "Secret Rendezvous" delights in killer vocals by Angela. Feel the heat.
